STORIED Magazine Volume 1 Kyoto Issue
- STORIED is inspired by the people, places, crafts, and traditions of Japan sharing stories unearthed across an archipelago of alluring culture
- STORIED is made for people seeking a connection to unknown characters and hideaways that are longing to be visited
Celebrating the notion of slow and sustainable journalism and touching personal narratives, STORIED takes our readers on a journey into the true heart of Japan. Volume One, The Kyoto Issue, sees us venture on a journey across unknown Kyoto—a setting of significance as the cultural heart of Japan and the place that we at STORIED call home.
In this issue we eschew the temples in favour of a photographic essay into daily life in the city, celebrating the beauty in the otherwise mundane through photographer Joe Keating’s emotive images. We break free of the city, traversing the forests and coasts of rural Kyoto, and we talk tea with the women that are pushing boundaries within the centuries-old industry.
We visit the world of traditional tattooing, an art form overtly discouraged in Japan yet one steeped in spiritual history, discussing what it means to perform the technique in present-day Kyoto—a city known for its strict adherence to cultural rules.

Japan-Best is first and foremost a story about Japanese craftsmen with the influence of contemporary design. We are inspired by the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and their ability to adapt to our modern lifestyle. The more brands we meet, the more passionate we become about the stories behind each product; the skills of the craftsmen, or the long tradition of an object left unchanged for generations yet somehow remaining contemporary.
Japan-Best is a collection of Japanese brands, which we have selected for the originality of their design, the quality of their production, the fact that their production is “Made in Japan”, and the long history that they maintain, quite often for several generations.
Our selection of Japanese food is also based on craftsmanship in agriculture. We choose brands based on how they are made and we love brands that continue to use traditional natural techniques to grow food and prepare it. Good packaging and design is always and added joy to find!
