Description
  • Made from hard, naturally antibacterial sansho wood, ideal for everyday use and long‑lasting durability
  • Subtle natural aroma of sansho when grinding sesame, nuts, or miso
  • Each piece is individually shaped with unique grain, knots, and slight variations, giving every pestle its own character

A beautifully crafted surikogi (grinding pestle) made from Japanese sansho (Japanese pepper) wood, this piece is designed for everyday use while bringing natural warmth to the kitchen. The dense, durable wood offers excellent resistance to wear and has natural antibacterial properties, making it especially well suited for regular contact with food.

Each pestal is made by skilled artisans who work with branches carefully grown over many years, selecting only those that are straight and strong enough for this purpose. The gently rounded tip allows you to grind smoothly at different angles, while the natural bark left on the surface preserves the organic character of the material. A small hole at the top with a cord makes it easy to hang and dry after washing, helping to keep the wood in good condition. With time and use, the surface will slowly change, gaining character and a sense of familiarity that reflects your daily cooking.

To care for this surikogi, rinse it soon after use, avoid soaking for long periods, and let it dry thoroughly in a well‑ventilated place. Using little or no detergent helps to preserve the natural fragrance of the wood; if you do use soap, rinse carefully and dry completely. Because it is made from natural wood, each piece has its own individual grain, color, and form, so no two are exactly alike. This simple, honest tool is a quiet way to bring more texture and warmth into everyday food preparation, connecting contemporary life with traditional Japanese kitchen craft.
