We use these stools for bathing. In Japan the bath experience is strictly for relaxation, not for cleaning ourselves. We always clean ourselves in the shower before entering the bath and same at hot springs. Before shower were invented, we used a bucket to wash with and this small stool to sit on in comfortable position and to conserve water. It is still very common to sit in the shower so that you can properly scrub your body before entering into the bath tub.
Hinoki wood has a high resistance to humidity and its oils naturally repel water. It is antibacterial and perfect for kitchens and baths.
Please note that sap naturally comes out of the wood. This does not stain or cause harm, it is part of the nature of the wood.
