Grand Prix Winner – "Japanese Tea Selection Paris" : This prize‑winning black tea blends Japanese black tea leaves with organically grown, hand‑picked Hassaku flowers, using a natural infusion method that draws the fragrance directly from the blossoms rather than from added flavouring. The result is a refined floral tea with a gentle jasmine‑like aroma, notes of green citrus, and a clean, slightly spicy finish that is excellent both hot and iced, and pairs beautifully with desserts.
A tea that blooms with elegance, Hanaemi’s Hassaku Flower Black Tea brings together the delicate charm of organic Hassaku blossoms and carefully crafted Japanese black tea. The floral fragrance is taken directly from fresh flowers, creating a natural, safe, and gracefully layered aroma.
Japanese black tea and green tea come from the same plant, but are processed differently. For black tea, the picked leaves are fully oxidised (darkened in contact with air) before drying, while for green tea oxidation is quickly stopped with heat. Kamairi tea is a rare Japanese style where the fresh leaves are pan‑roasted in an iron kettle, giving a toasty, refreshing aroma and a clear, golden liquor.
Each batch is made in very small quantities to preserve purity and freshness. Only a limited number are available, with a purchase limit of two per customer in Japan and one per customer abroad.
What is the Hassaku flower? The Hassaku flower is the blossom of Citrus hassaku, a Japanese citrus grown mainly in western Japan, known for its mild sweetness, pleasant bitterness, and fresh aroma. Its soft white‑floral scent with bright citrus notes, somewhere between orange blossom and jasmine, brings a light, uplifting fragrance to this tea.
About the Paris award: JAPANESE TEA SELECTION PARIS is a Japanese tea competition in Paris dedicated to introducing Japanese teas to French consumers and professionals. Under the guidance of Japanese Tea Ambassador Misako Noso, a panel of French tea buyers, chefs, and members of the public judges teas over several sessions, making the Grand Prix in the “Other” category a significant international distinction for this tea.
The tea farm is a kamairi tea farm in Gokase Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, at an elevation of around 600 meters in almost the exact centre of Kyushu. To the north spreads the majestic Mount Aso, while to the west you can see Kumamoto Prefecture and, in the distance, Nagasaki’s Unzen; on clear days, a sweeping sunset view has earned the town the nickname “Sunset Village.” Kamairi tea, unlike standard sencha, is made by roasting the tea leaves in a kettle, giving a refreshing aroma and a clear golden liquor often called “golden tea,” and although it was once common in households and on many farms, it now accounts for only about 1% of Japan’s tea production, making it an extremely rare style.
