We use these basins for bathing, either at home or at the hot springs. In Japan the bath experience is strictly for relaxation, not for cleaning ourselves. We always clean ourselves in the shower before entering the bath both at home and at hot springs. Before shower were invented, we used this bucket to wash with. It is still common to have this type of bucket as it conserves water and it is also a nice ritual. 

Hinoki wood has a high resistance to humidity and its oils naturally repel water. It is antibacterial and perfect for kitchens and baths. 

Since this bucket is made of hinoki wood, it can be used for many other purposes including storage, chilling drinks in ice, etc. 

Please note that sap naturally comes out of the wood. This does not stain or cause harm, it is part of the nature of the wood.
