Black tea “matcha” from Kagoshima, made by carefully stone-milling black tea tencha – the same Camellia sinensis plant used for green tea, with oxidation transforming it into black tea. Japan has been producing wakōcha, or Japanese black tea, since the Meiji era. When tasting wakōcha, there is a distinct Japanese character that reflects generations of tea farmers’ skill.
Most black teas become sharp, astringent, and unpleasantly tannic when milled into a fine powder, which is why they are rarely treated like matcha. This tea is different: low in astringency, with a smooth mouthfeel and gentle natural sweetness, even without added sugar.
Named “Aka Matcha” for its dark red-brown colour, which is referred to as “aka,” or “red,” in Japanese.
How to enjoy:
1. Place a spoonful of benimatcha powder into a bowl or cup.
2. Pour 70–80°C water over the powder. Boiling water can damage the aroma, so allow it to cool slightly first.
3. Whisk or stir briskly for about 15 seconds until the powder is evenly dissolved and a light foam appears.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and consume as soon as possible after opening
How to enjoy:
1. Take a spoon full of matcha powder and place it in the bowl.
2. Pour 80°c - 70°c water over the matcha. Boiling water will ruin the matcha so make sure the water has cooled.
3. Hold the bowl firmly with one hand and whisk vigorously with the other for about 15 seconds, making an "M" or "W" shape movement.
4. When small foam appears on the surface, the matcha is ready
Storage: Please store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight (Both before and after opening). It is best to consume it soon after opening. Otherwise, you could put it in a ziplock bag and store in the freezer.
